Round 15: UWS Sirens take 2 from 2 this Bank Holiday weekend in thrilling clash against Celtic Dragons

5th June 2018

Dearns side controlled the game throughout to secure their second win in a row to continue their climb up the VNSL standings.

UWS Sirens starting seven were: GS Slater, GA Walker, WA Murphy, C Bayman, WD Brownie, GD Nicholl and GK Aiken Pinnock.

UWS Sirens kick started the match with first centre pass, but the ball was turned over quickly by Dragons and they were the first to get a point on the board. Both teams started the game in a fast fashion, however this lead to a series of bad passes from Sirens and contact calls from Dragons. Sirens soon got into their rhythm following classic intercepts from Aiken Pinnock and Nicholl to lead the score line to 16-9 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, full court pressure from Sirens won various turnovers. There were impressive phases of play by Aiken Pinnock and Nicholl who worked tirelessly in the shooting circle for tips and interceptions to allow Sirens to extend their lead. Following a call from the umpire to settle game play, Sirens created their biggest lead of the game to finish the first half 33-21.

Gallagher comes on at GA for the third quarter and made immediate impact. Perfect partnerships between Slater and Gallagher, Murphy and Bayman allowed for a feast of clean and consistent feeds into the shooting circle. There were some great long-range shots between Bayman and Brownie and passing was more clinical in this quarter. McCleery came on at WA and Gibbons at GK with 5 minutes to go. A goal by Gallagher in the final seconds lead the score line to 47-34.

In the final quarter Sirens continued to build on an impressive display. Brownie, Gibbons and Aiken Pinnock kept to their work in defense whilst Slater’s and Gallagher’s shooting was focused and consistent. Sirens lead continued to grow and secured the convincing victory, 65-43.
