Preview: Manchester Thunder vs Strathclyde Sirens
25th January 2019
Strathclyde Sirens star Ella Gibbons has revealed the team’s secret weapon for their road trip to Manchester – the melodic tones of Zac Efron.
The girls travel down south for their visit to Belle Vue against an established Vitality Superleague franchise in Manchester Thunder.
But that doesn’t faze Gibbons and the rest of the squad, who coasted to victory in their last away day in Birmingham against Surrey Storm.
And she insists the secret is to stick on a musical like The Greatest Showman for the journey.
She said: “It’s always tough going down and playing in front of someone else’s home crowd, particularly Manchester.
“They’ve been in the league for a long time and they have a big fanbase.
“But we want to go into someone else’s ground and show them what we’re about and what we’ve got.
“We’re the furthest team in terms of travelling to away games so we make it a big day out.
“On the way down we often put on a movie, usually a sing-a-long type of movie.
“A bit of ABBA, Mamma Mia perhaps. We sing along to it, much to the distaste of some of the management team!
“I feel like it could be The Greatest Showman this time. It’s got a lot of feel-good tunes for the journey.”
Gibbons and the rest of the side were allowed a week’s rest with the international Quad Series taking place.
And while she’s appreciated the rest, the ever-smiling goal keeper can’t wait for another run-out.
She said: “I’m really excited to get back out on court. We’ve had a weekend off to give us time to practice for this game.
“Thunder are a slick team and they’ve been together for a while but we’re going in the right direction.
“We’re ready to go and show what the Sirens are here for.”
