Sirens hope to net home advantage as they take on Team Bath at Emirates Arena
29th March 2017
Scotland’s new pro-women’s sports team, the Sirens, finally returns to home soil on Friday (31st March centre-pass 7pm) as they take on top 4 side Team Bath at the Emirates Arena in the 7th Round of the UK’s Vitality Netball Superleague. After a sell-out debut game in front of 4,000 spectators and live Sky Sports tv cameras, the Sirens then spent a gruelling 5 weeks on the road playing a series of challenging away games with mixed successes. The team of top netballing talent managed to net some of the League’s biggest wins positioning themselves as the second highest scoring team to date, however, a couple of tough fixtures saw them defeated in the final quarters and sitting in the middle of the table.
This Friday, however, the Sirens are back in Scotland and are looking forward to being able to play in front of their home crowds, hoping to use the support to their advantage. Sirens Captain Claire Brownie said:
“We can’t wait to play at home again. Having 5 away games on the bounce has been a challenge, but it has also allowed us to really gel as a team and we’ve taken learnings from each game which we are continuing to build on. On Friday we face my old team, Team Bath, and they have a top team so we need to be at the top of our game too. I’m confident that, with our amazing supporters cheering us on our home soil, we will really challenge them and can come away with the win.”
The Sirens, created through a partnership between Netball Scotland and the University of the West of Scotland, have really made their mark on both the Superleague and women’s sport in Scotland since their launch last month, and show no signs of slowing down. Committed to #ChangingTheGame both on and off the court, the Sirens have been delivering a series of community programmes across Scottish schools and clubs, and have had a constant media presence both locally and nationally.
Head Coach Gail Parata continues: “The Sirens full squad assembled on 6th January 2017 and since then it has been a whirlwind of media coverage and preparation with the focus being on building a team culture off court and building connections and combinations on court. Both continue to grow each week, but it is a process that takes time.
We are excited to finally be coming home again and playing in front of our amazing fans here at the Emirates Arena. Our matches ahead are going to be tough as we play previous League Champions but we are mentally strong and ready to bring home the wins.”
The Sirens have also announced today a new partnership with Certeco, a UK based business change management consultancy. Certeco join the Sirens’ family of sponsors who are all leading the way in women’s sport investment in Scotland.
Augusto Negrillo, COO of Certeco commented: “We are delighted to be affiliated with the Sirens. The focus, courage and determination these women bring to netball is admirable and we are proud to be helping them on their journey. Women’s sport has definitely come into the spotlight in the last few years. And it’s about time!”
Caroline Mansley, Chair of the Sirens Management Group, said: “S…IS FOR SUPPORT! The Sirens are delighted to have teamed up with Certeco – together we are #ChangingTheGame! There has never been a better time to harness the passion of sport, and sponsorship wields transformative power that is capable of driving exponential growth in brand awareness and affinity. Certeco has recognised that and we are looking forward to working together in our debut season in the Superleague.’’
