Round 2: Manchester Thunder Take the Win at Belle Vue against UWS Sirens
21st February 2018
The home crowd enjoyed the match-up between the formidable Sara Bayman, a former Thunder player, and Caroline O’Hanlon who supported the Sirens in our debut season.
Thunder pushed to a 10-goal lead by half time, resultant of errors made by UWS Sirens in the first quarter that saw them then chasing for the rest of the game. Despite this, our team were not prepared to back down, and made sure that they maintained their defensive pressure, and producing some really special phases of play through the attacking end.
The UWS Sirens grew into the game, with Brownie and Bayman producing some top class intercepts and some slick nets from Slater and Gallagher. However, it was Thunder that continued their high tempo strategy, ultimately leading them to their 60-43 win.
It’s never easy starting the season with a string of away games, particularly for a team still getting used tot heir new combinations and teammate connections, however the season has just begun so the UWS Sirens have been spending much of this week recovering and analysing their performance in preparation for Wasps on Thursday 22nd February.
Head Coach Tanya Dearns said:
“Thunder didn’t put us under that much pressure, but our biggest error was our pass and catch game. We gave the ball away and if we do that on a consistent basis we’ll not get to the right side of the scoreline.”
“The Team have worked really hard off the court, they’re doing what they’re supposed to do. It’s just getting that belief on court, and not panicking under pressure.”
“It’s back to the drawing board for us in preparation for our game against Wasps, ensuring better connections and having more confidence in our ability as we have a really strong team this season.”
Captain Claire Brownie said:
“We have so much potential in this team and we know what we produced against Thunder didn’t reflect our talent. As a group we will analyse our performance and ensure we come out fighting against the defending champions in our next match.”
Next Game: Thursday 22nd February against Wasps Netball at Ricoh Arena.
