Round 1: UWS Sirens See Last Year’s Finalists Take the Win in Season Opener

12th February 2018

UWS Sirens made their first call of the season against Loughborough Lightning on Saturday 10th February at Sir David Wallace Arena, where last year’s finalists took the win 55-44. It was always going to be a tight match against Loughborough Lightning, but the team tightly contested, made lots of gains and pushed them hard.

For Ella Gibbons and Vanessa Walker, things got personal as they challenged their once teammates and now rivals, in their first game of the season. The match started with the energy, power and flight with both teams claiming points for their centre passes. It wasn’t until Loughborough Lightning made a crucial turnover which saw them take the lead, but the UWS Sirens made it loud and clear that they were not backing down.

Half time concluded with better play and lots of interceptions as UWS Sirens started to find their stride, but Lightning continued to lead with 32-23. Gibbons took to GD for Kennedy, and Gallagher on for Walker at GA, both immediately making an impact and as a team delivered a strong run, particularly in the last quarter which saw UWS Sirens scoring the most goals in Q4. Despite the result, UWS Sirens generated lots of opportunities, 56 attempts at goal in comparison to 59 by Loughborough Lightning. Now it’s down to the team to refocus and reduce those errors in prep for Round 2 against Manchester Thunder on the 19th February.

Head Coach Tanya Dearns said: “Relieved to get our first game played and our season underway in earnest. Obviously not the result we were working for, however there were lots of positives that came out of the game. We finished the game strongly winning the last quarter and we generated a lot of opportunities for ourselves which is pleasing. This week will be about working on reducing our errors, and making sure we nail the shots.”

UWS Sirens are ready to take on Manchester Thunder and Wasps Netball, before challenging Team Northumbria at their first home game of the season on the 26th February. Buy your tickets here.
